DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
There are still many prejudices associated with the world of disability, especially when it comes to affection, sexuality or parenthood. There are many women with disabilities who are discouraged from motherhood and feel judged daily for their desire for autonomy. It is assumed that a woman with a disability is not able to have a career, a social and emotional life, a pregnancy and raise children. And those who want to do so are left alone and look for professionals without specialised training. Article 23 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities states that “States Parties shall take effective and appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against persons with disabilities in all matters relating to marriage, family, parenthood and relationships on an equal basis with others. The MoMs project aims to support a society that is more aware of the issue and more culturally open-minded. In addition, the project aims to educate people with disabilities and health and education professionals about the rights of people with disabilities through accessible materials.
The project, through its products, aims to spread awareness of motherhood for women with disabilities among healthcare/educational professionals and among people with disabilities themselves.
WHAT ARE OUR PROJECT'S OBJECTIVES?
The main objective is to bridge the gap in communication and knowledge at a national and European level.
The MoMs project focuses on women with disabilities while also targeting professionals in education and healthcare. Its objectives align with key Erasmus+ priorities:
1. Inclusion and diversity – promoting the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of life, including more intimate and personal matters.
2. Upskilling and accessibility – creating accessible training materials to raise awareness about motherhood for women with disabilities and educate professionals.
3. Competence development for educators – supporting professionals like educators, healthcare workers, psychologists, and therapists in improving their understanding and empathy toward women with disabilities.
WHAT ARE OUR PROJECT'S RESULTS?
Upon completion of the project the partnership will have produced the following results:
1.Research Book: A comprehensive “Research Book” will compile reports from focus groups, providing an informative text on the legal and cultural frameworks surrounding the rights of women with disabilities and motherhood. The document will be available in the national languages of all partners, with summaries translated into National Sign Languages and International Sign.
2. MoMs’ Tools:
•Self-assessment Tool: A tool for professionals to evaluate their preparedness and training on motherhood support for people with disabilities.
•Forum & Network: A platform connecting people with disabilities and trained professionals to share experiences, collaborate, and offer mutual support.
•LTTA: Training for a group of professionals and people with disabilities to share knowledge on inclusive practices, creating a pool of qualified individuals who can further disseminate these skills. Two TPMs hosted by COCEMFE Sevilla will track progress and guide future steps.
3.Informative Pills:
•Creation of accessible, informative materials and videos for professionals and people with disabilities on motherhood-related topics, including pregnancy and post-pregnancy guidelines.
•Videos will be available in Sign Languages and International Sign, ensuring content is accessible to all.
•The materials aim to empower people with disabilities and professionals by providing practical tips, promoting self-determination, and addressing ableism.
These results contribute to raising awareness, enhancing competences, and supporting the inclusion of people with disabilities in motherhood and broader societal contexts.
